Regulation of Offshore Oil and Gas Exploration and Production (by Margarita Zarate)

Based on the theory of regulation, my PhD focuses on the regulation of offshore oil and gas exploration and production in its three dimensions: rule-making, monitoring and enforcement. My dissertation compares the regulatory regimes developed by the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Norway and the Netherlands for protecting human health, safety and the environment in offshore oil and gas activities. I particularly focus on the use of enforcement tools and how different enforcement styles may contribute to promote safety in offshore oil and gas operations and protect the marine environment.

Besides risk regulation and supervision in the oil and gas sector, my research focuses on the broad field of energy law covering climate change and renewable energies.
